A quick search reveals that for about €230 to €300 you can currently pick up a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini or a Galaxy S4. We also included a few other devices from the same price bracket as the ZTE Nubia Z9 mini. ZTE itself has another Snapdragon 615 phone, which we have previously reviewed - the Blade S6, so we are throwing it in the mix as well. The vivo X5 Max is also in pretty much the same boat and so is the Archos 50 Diamond. HTC also has a couple of units with the Snapdragon 615 inside - the Desire 820 and 826.Īnd on the local market, there is Oppo, with the R5 and R7 models - both also slightly costlier than the Nubia, but still based on mostly the same hardware platform. All three are priced slightly higher than the Nubia Z9 mini, but still within mid-range limits. Samsung, for instance, has based a lot of new devices on the very same platform, like the Galaxy J7 and the metal A7 and A8 models. RAM is set at 2GB which is plenty for most every task and the dual-band ac Wi-Fi chip should provide a stable stage for browser performance.Īs for contenders, it really wasn't difficult finding Snapdragon 615-powered handsets to pit the ZTE up against. The ZTE Nubia Z9 mini is equipped with a 5.0-inch Full HD screen, which is great for visuals, but does put some extra strain on the Adreno 405 GPU. The custom OS can have a major impact in this respect as well. We have seen devices perform rather well with this chip, but it can also do quite poorly in our benchmarks when not properly implemented and utilized. It is powered by what is currently Qualcomm's go to mid-range SoC - the Snapdragon 615. We don’t endorse benchmark tests and do not recommend a phone based solely on benchmarks as real world performance is different at times. The ZTE Nubia Z9 mini might take after its bigger sibling in terms of looks, but, as it's price tag would suggest, it is a undoubtedly mid-range offer. The benchmark scores are comparable to that of YU Yureka but lag behind Xiaomi Mi 4i. In synthetic benchmarks, the Nubia Z9 mini scored 15,497 in Quadrant Standard, 33,224 in AnTuTu and 58.4 in NenaMark 2. We did observe that the phone has a tendency to slightly heat up after playing games for more than 10-15 minutes. Thanks to 2GB of RAM, we didn’t struggle with opening multiple apps or browser tabs in the background. We found the Nubia Z9 mini to be very responsive and there was no lag or stutter during casual use. It has 16GB internal storage and a microSD card slot that supports cards of up to 128GB. Performance In terms of hardware, the ZTE Nubia Z9 Mini is well endowed and comes with a 64-bit 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB RAM. Video quality of videos shot with the phone was also satisfactory but we observed that th phone tends to get warm after shooting for more than 10 minutes. Selfies shot with the 8MP front shooter also looked appealing. It also has a Pro mode for granular control ZTE has pre-loaded the phone with a really feature-rich Camera app and some Camera family apps to offer slow shutter, panorama, and video features. Camera The phone is equipped with a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. It also offers motion sensing gestures (flip to mute, shake to change songs, shake to clear notifications) and double tap to unlock. We’ve spotted these features mostly on large screen phones and we’re not sure if users will find these handy on a 5-inch device. The software also offers advanced features like split screen functionality to run two apps simultaneously and a one-hand use mode. You can of course download and install an alternate launcher. But it will take some time to get used to if you have already been using an Android smartphone. The unified home screen-app launcher style may come across as user-friendly to people who have not used an Android phone before. Just like Xiaomi’s MIUI and Gionee’s Amigo skins, the UI is devoid of an app drawer and app icons and widgets are spread across the home screens. The phone doesn’t feature Android Lollipop’s visual elements the system apps don’t sport Material design and the app switcher is similar to the one on MiUI. The company calls the software skin Nubia UI and adds custom apps, app icons, menus and transition effects to give it a distinct flavour. Software The Nubia Z9 Mini runs a highly customized version of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
